Storytelling through the art of filmmaking
In January 2024, I was tasked with the heavy responsibility of putting together a video for my sister’s wedding in March. The vision was to surprise the couple with a meaningful video narrated by their nearest and dearest. Being in Sydney and away from home, I came up with the idea to interview the couple’s friends and family online, drawing out the couple’s story from their perspectives. My efforts were definitely paid off as I witnessed 300 over people (along with the couple) laughing and tearing up on the actual day.
From 2023-2024, I had the opportunity to work freelance with the UTS Business School by producing videos for their marketing team. These are a few examples of the types of videos I had shot and edited independently.
While interning at Thir.st as a Video Intern, I got to work on a few projects in a range of roles.
I produced the series Behind the Paycheque, which spotlights different vocations that Christians often think are ‘grey area’ jobs, and got Christians in the industry to answer crowdsourced questions.
I was the assistant producer for The Distance Between, a short film about a migrant worker in Singapore and his family back home. As an AP, I oversaw scheduling, production design and props.
Unheard Narratives is a series where strangers read anonymous confessions and heartfelt life stories. I was involved in editing some of the episodes from this series.
I was a Media Intern at Pasir Panjang Christ Church for a year during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic hit, church services quickly went online and that meant that special presentations and encouragement had to be brought online as well. As such, I had to find ways to keep to the COVID-19 regulations where video production was essentially impossible. By getting members to film themselves and using stock footage, I worked on a number of videos that aimed to serve and encourage the church during this trying season of time.
As part of my Diploma in Mass Communication, I chose a module called Advanced TV Production in my third year and had the opportunity to work on a short film and a music video in a team.
Directing this short film was a challenge since I had close to no understanding or grasp of the Malay language or culture. However, in the process of working with my cast and crew, I had learned so much more about the Malay culture than I expected and even though I focused on the cinematography and overall look of the film, it was an unforgettable and enriching experience.
I co-directed and edited this music video. This being my first attempt working on a music video, I had realised my interest in interpreting music and executing the story visually. I enjoyed the whole process of understanding how music, lyrics and video intertwine from pre to post production.
